Algarve Golf Property

Image
If you feel fed up every winter, perhaps now’s the time to consider a property investment abroad. Somewhere warm, sunny, not too far away and with great golf, somewhere like the Algarve… Winter is the season when we become all too aware of the shortened days and colder temperatures. But there is a cure which simply involves a trip to the airport with a bag containing shorts, t-shirts and some sun-cream. Just make sure that you book a flight heading south at this time of year, a trip in the opposite direction would give you no escape from these darkening days. My escape plan one dull November day was to head to Portugal. I arrive at Faro Airport to be greeted by wall-to-wall sunshine and a comfortable 23 degrees. With the memory of shivering in the UK fast disappearing, I pick up my hire car, open the windows and head of for Pestana Golf Resort in the Algarve. My trip to Pestana Golf Resort is to report on two new real estate developments, but if I can squeeze in a round of golf...

Golf in Tuscany - La Bagnaia Golf & Spa Resort

Image
Missing planes is much worse than missing putts, as our luckless correspondent Clive Agan finds out when flying the Italy to visit La Bagnaia Golf & Spa Resort. By Clive Agan Never before has a badly sliced tee-shot off the first felt so good as it did recently at La Bagnaia Golf and Spa Resort in Siena, Italy. The thrill I felt probably had a lot less to do with the quality of the shot than the fact that I was finally out in the fresh Italian air rather than languishing in a soulless airport terminal. Yes, the stunning Tuscan scenery did much to lift my weary mood. My challenging journey meant that I arrived a day late, but missing the fairway was far less disappointing than missing the previous day’s practice with European Tour Pro, Chris Wood. As it was, I had 11 minutes from stepping out of the smart Mercedes (that collected me 80 minutes earlier from Florence airport) before teeing off. Clearly, two desultory swings were insufficient preparation for such a prestige ev...

Kent's golden golf oldies - By Linda Jackson for Great Golf

Image
The coastal region of Kent has seen plenty of battles throughout history, but today the battles that are fought take place on what are some of the UK’s best links courses... Bunkers, in one form or another, play and have played an important role in Kent, a county on the south-east coast which is steeped in history and widely regarded as being the ‘Garden of England’.  While the attractive sand bunkers created on Kent’s golf courses make links play a pleasurable challenge for groups of golfers today, bunkers built during wartime created challenges of a different nature for our troops of soldiers.     Located on land overlooking the English Channel – land and channel very much at the centre of action during both world wars – are four notable golf courses, namely Royal St George’s which dates back to 1887, Littlestone which was first played on during 1888, Royal Cinque Ports (aka Deal) where the first nine holes were constructed in 1892 and Prince’s, which opened an 18-...

Okinawa – Tropical Japan

Image
Many more of us are enticed by a trip to Japan. It’s no longer a country that only offers eye-wateringly expensive but masterfully wrapped apples. These days it’s a financially viable holiday destination which tempts tourists with some surprising options. Most visitors will want to see Tokyo. One wouldn’t come all the way to Japan and miss it. This huge modern city makes a great stop-over as it will likely be your travel hub. Enjoy the iconic cityscapes, use that celebrated Shibuya Crossing with its thousands of pedestrians; but consider that less-known part of Japan, Okinawa, which you will probably need to find on a map. Look a long way to the left. Okinawa is famous for its long-lived population. With 34 centenarians per 100,000 people, this is more than three times the rate of mainland Japan, which already has a creditable aging track record. But Okinawa is, in fact, a vibrant and exciting island that presents tourists with culture, shopping, food and sports. It’s Japan’s undi...
